Early Season Weed Control

Soon when the forsythia are in bloom, you will want to apply your early season weed control. This can be done using Preen or organic Corn Gluten. (Both available at Russell’s Tree & Shrub Farm, 9500 Transit Road, East Amherst)

An easy way to apply Preen is to fill a large coffee can that you previously punched holes in bottom using a large nail. Use the lid to cover the nailed bottom until you are in the bed then remove it and shake it. Do not get Preen on your lawn as it will burn the grass. If you can apply it just before it rains, that would be great so it can dissolve quickly.

I like to apply corn gluten, “like you are feeding the chickens”, applying generously. You don’t have to worry about overspray because it will break down into a low grade nitrogen, a form of fertilizer.

Either application is best applied BEFORE mulching.

If you have an excessive amount of weeds on your lawn, it is best to apply a total coverage over the lawn area or to use a granular pre-emergent lawn weed and feed. Again, wait for the forsythia.

So Excited!

This morning, I get to start my 43rd year gardening, serving others, creating solutions for clients and hopefully, having repetitive opportunities to accomplish what I am blessed to do.
May the Lord watch over me, allow me to represent what is good and beautiful through my labors to those He provides for me and to shine His light from within.
